Gear is good, or is it a hindrance?

Some random thoughts to add to this age old debate:

Good

  • Different gear is like having different paintbrushes, particularly useful when you have a project in mind

  • Versatility to satisfy the creative monster in you -speaking of which..

  • Creative freedom allowing you more tools to experiment

  • Professionalism particularly if you have paid shoots

  • Efficiency and time saving in post if you can get the desired look in the shot

  • Development as a photographer by adding more skills or sharpening old ones with specific gear.

Bad

  • Cost, enough said (unless work calls for it)

  • Complexity, as in, what does this button do again.. how do I do that? I thought it was only me until I had a chat with a photographers who were having same issue

  • Portability aka My bag is too big for damn walk around

  • Decisions, decisions.. way too many already in the day, one less decision I need

  • Storage, where to store?

  • Bad investment. Don’t be stupid and greedy and don’t even call it an investment (even with some rare exceptions).

There’s no need to make this short post sound like a Sergio movie, these are some thoughts for safekeeping in case there’s something flashy on eBay or Gummy.

Thank god for the M-system, it’s still the go-to, GAS-killer.

..sort of.
