Navigating the Photo Sharing Dilemma
I’ve been grappling with this dilemma - what do you do with all your photos? Yes you save them, be it cloud, or at home, or both. You store the negs in folders, scan some and repeat the same process. You do this often enough you amass quite a collection. Sifting through is a pain, even with tags, categories and folders.
A lot of us share on Instagram, just to show some work and let everyone know your alive. But Instagram shares are time-consuming and getting tedious. There’s a lot of curation that goes into the grid and cutting down my frequency to a weekly share hasn’t helped.
To make things more manageable, I’m thinking of sharing less frequently. And most of us have. Here’s a take from Wall Street Journal:
A report from Morning Consult noted that 61% of U.S. adults have become more selective about what they post. Users are concerned about controlling the content they see, protecting their privacy, and a general feeling that social media isn't as fun as it used to be.
n.b. I’m sure US study is true everywhere.
The last bit rings true with me: “social media isn’t as fun as it used to be”. But now the question becomes - is there an intermittent state in between social media and the ever-growing photo archives.
Perhaps the answer is longer more thoughtful form of shares like the good ol fashion blogs, with inserts of photos selects here and there.
And another options is printing your faves, sitting in cafe and sharing it with people you know and trust. Both sound like viable options.
I’m curious to know if you face the same dilemma and if you have your own interim state?
Instagram isn’t the answer.
Terabytes isn’t the answer too.
The answer isn’t a photo book project (in a sea of self-published work). And it takes a while to build a collection.
An exhibition also takes time (and a lot money).
For now I’ve chosen to keep it simple and hopefully meaningful, through this blog and by printing/sharing.
What is your interim state? Do you even have one? Or do you add bits to tera?
